Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide, laughing gas as it’s commonly referred, is one of the longest used forms of sedation available, and it’s still one of the most preferred sedative methods for medical and dental care. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through the nose, and patients almost immediately achieve a state of advanced relaxation. The dosage is easily adjusted during treatment to provide optimal comfort, and because patients are under doctor observation, nitrous oxide is one of the safest forms of sedation. Best of all, the sedative wears away as quickly as it takes hold meaning patients are able to return to their daily activities immediately following treatment.
Have you ever listened to the dentist describing various oral health concerns or treatment options, and thought to yourself, “I wish I could see what he’s talking about?” You’re not alone. That’s why intraoral photography has had such a profound impact on patient care. These images of patients’ smiles make it possible for our team to show them the areas of potential concern, and more clearly explain their treatment options. We’re able to zoom in, enlarge, and otherwise enhance these images making them an incomparable patient education tool.
Digital x-rays offer our team high definition images of the inner workings of patients’ smiles, with minimal exposure to radiation, and maximal convenience. Traditional x-rays had to be developed by hand, physical copies had to be stored and shared between our office and specialists’ practices or insurance providers, and the lower quality scans were only visible on a special light board. Our Dexis brand digital x-rays offer crystal clear images that are instantly viewable on chairside monitors, and these x-rays can be viewed, stored, and transferred immediately via computer.
Using the Biolase soft-tissue laser, our team can make several common treatments more comfortable and convenient for patients. In most cases, soft-tissue procedures required the use of a scalpel and stitches, and these treatments could be painful and take a significant amount of time to heal. The Biolase system makes it possible for us to remove a precise amount of damaged soft tissue while cauterizing the treatment sight and promoting faster healing. Dr. Hughes also uses Biolase to prepare teeth for fillings and restorations without the need for traditional drilling, offering patients exceptionally comfortable experiences.
The Benefits of Laser Dentistry
With laser dentistry, Dr. Hughes is able to pinpoint a treatment location. Therefore, there is far less risk of damage to surrounding tissue. Moreover, because of this precision, the results of treatment are much easier to predict, providing patients with a safer and more reliable outcome. Other advantages of laser dentistry are:
- No need for a local anesthetic because there is typically little to no pain during laser treatment
- Minimal bleeding after soft tissue treatment, because the laser vaporizes tissue rather than cuts
- Less chance of infection
- No need for a scalpel or sutures, so patients are far less anxious about their procedure
We always strive to offer patients comfortable treatment that is effective. Using the WaterLase hard-tissue laser, Dr. Hughes can eliminate oral infection in a minimally-invasive manner with light and water. No drilling is necessary, and most patients do not require any anesthesia due to the laser's gentle power.
The most common sources of pain with conventional drills are heat and pressure—but the WaterLase eliminates these entirely, all while reducing bleeding and swelling. Several treatments can be performed with WaterLase, including periodontal therapy, root canals, frenectomies, and even extractions. Patients love the WaterLase because it is virtually painless, very safe, exceptionally precise and its disposable tips reduce the risk of cross-contamination.
DIAGNOdent Laser-Assisted Cavity Detection
As part of our ongoing dedication to preventive dental care, we use the DIAGNOdent early cavity detection system. X-rays and visual examinations allow our team to diagnose and repair decay and damage with fillings in their earliest stages, but DIAGNOdent allows our team to pinpoint weakened dental structures to stop decay before it ever starts. By scanning and measuring the density of tooth enamel, our team is able to guide patients’ at home hygiene to prevent decay.
CEREC® Same-Day Dentistry
With Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CEREC®, the treatment for dental crowns can be completed in just one visit to Robert Hughes DDS. It’s an incredibly efficient, effective way to restore teeth from decay or damage. The CEREC® milling machine uses a digital map of your mouth to create your dental crown from a single block of porcelain or ceramic. In addition to its wonderful convenience, CEREC® offers increased precision -- meaning you get a better fitting crown, faster than you ever thought possible.
DEXIS CariVu™ uses a patented transillumination technology to reveal cavities and cracks in your teeth. The safe, near-infrared light makes healthy enamel appear transparent while cavities, cracks and other lesions trap the light and appear darker. Essentially, Dr. Hughes is able to see through a tooth. The result is visually similar to an x-ray image.
Dexis X-Ray Sensors
With Dexis X-ray Sensors, Dr. Hughes and his team are able to create digital radiography images that are very clear and detailed. With these sensors, we are able to see subtle changes in tooth structure. Also, Dexis X-ray Sensors are easier to position and more comfortable in patients’ mouths.
T-SCAN is a digital occlusion analysis system. Other dentists may use only articulating paper to pinpoint bite problems. Dr. Hughes is now able to use T-SCAN alone or in combination with articulating paper for a more precise diagnosis.
T-SCAN technology can be used in a number of dental applications including:
- Cosmetic Dentistry
- Occlusal Analysis
- TMJ Therapy
- Initial Examinations
