Robert Hughes Newsletter CEREC Technology
Hope everyone is doing well this week!
Now that we’ve settled into 2018, we thought it would be prudent to tell you all about a technology that will make your future dental visits easier, especially if you plan on getting a dental restoration. While it’s been around for a while now, some of you may not have heard of CEREC technology and its revolutionary benefits for many types of dental restorations.
When it comes to our patients, we think they deserve a level of convenience not typically found in dentist offices. For example, when you needed a dental crown or veneer created, you most likely had to wait a while before receiving it. That 40-minute-long trip you had to make it to our practice had to happen again a few weeks later, right? Thanks to CEREC, that’s forever in the past.
For those currently with dental crowns, you know that fabricating traditional crowns was a two-step process. The initial visit involved shaping your current tooth for a restoration, then giving you a temporary crown while the permanent one was being created. This typically happened at an off-site dental lab and took weeks to produce, but why should you have two separate appointments just to address a single tooth?
When you came for your follow-up, we’d remove the temporary crown and attempt to place the permanent crown. For those uninitiated, sometimes a crown based on the molding would be flawed. This was either because the crown didn’t quite fit right or the color was off, forcing us to start the whole process over again. That meant using the gray, goopy, impression mold nobody likes and then praying that the next crown would fit properly.
Why should you have to deal with multiple 80-minute, round trip commutes to the dentist only to be disappointed by an ill-fitting crown?
With CEREC technology, those frustrations are gone, and the future is here.
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramics, which is appropriate considering it does exactly what the name implies:
- It’s chairside, meaning it can be done in-office in a single visit.
- It’s economical, because it creates a more precise restoration and saves us material normally used for a temporary crown.
- It’s for esthetic purposes, so you can expect to have a natural smile by the end of treatment.
- And it’s ceramic, so you don’t sacrifice quality to get a crown more quickly.
The process for creating a crown this way is very simple. Instead of using that nasty impression goop, it uses a digital infrared camera to capture several images of your tooth. We have to say; impression clay sounds downright prehistoric when you compare the two.
After capturing, CEREC’s computer software program converts these images into a design for your new crown. We then send that design to our milling machine and in as little as 20 minutes, your crown is produced.
You can still use your insurance to pay for dental crowns. Additionally, CEREC crowns are metal-free, so you can feel safe knowing you’ll have a 100% biocompatible material protecting your teeth.
We understand that getting crowns in the past was a hassle, but now you, your friends, and your family can get a new crown the same day as your appointment. If you have a cracked tooth or bad filling you’ve been putting off because of the hassle, consider scheduling an appointment today. We’d love to meet whoever you bring in!
